What Is A VEP Test?

VEP, also known as Visual Evoked Potential Test, is a painless and non-invasive electrophysiological test that helps examine and diagnose optic nerve problems. It measures how efficiently the optical pathway functions from the eyes to the brain’s occipital lobe. The test is primarily used to diagnose any damage to the pathway that may potentially cause certain visual problems.

It is important to know here that the visual pathway comprises the optic nerve, retina, striate cortex, optic chiasm, etc. As your eyes are exposed to the light, the retina converts it into electrical signals which then travel through your optic nerves and to the brain’s occipital cortex. It is a vital region of the eye that directly impacts your vision.

A VEP test helps diagnose one of the most crucial conditions – optic neuritis. It is associated with multiple sclerosis, resulting in vision loss and pain. Hence, a visual evoked potential test is a valuable tool that can help diagnose critical nerve disorders which may affect your vision.

When Is A VER & VEP Test Recommended?

Your doctor may suggest getting a VEP test done if you are experiencing sudden changes in your vision due to certain problems in the visual pathway. These include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of vision, non-painful or painful
  • Weakness of the eyes, legs or arms
  • Changes in colour vision
  • Flashing lights
  • Double vision

These changes in the vision may often be too subtle and cannot be detected easily through a clinical examination. Therefore, you may need to get a VEP test in Delhi. It can help in the early diagnosis of problems in your optic nerve. It is also effective in examining the vision of adults or children who cannot read eye charts.

What Can A VPE Test Detect?

The visual evoked potential test helps measure the time a visual stimulus takes to travel from your eyes to the occipital cortex. This enables the doctor to understand whether there are some anomalies in the nerve pathway or if it is functioning optimally. For instance, health conditions like multiple sclerosis may affect the insulating layer around nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain.

Hence, the electrical signals will take more time to travel from your eyes. This can lead to an abnormal VEP during the test. With early diagnosis, we can precisely diagnose these problems to help you get prompt treatment before your vision is affected.

How Is A VPE Test Performed?

Our technician will first mark the positions to place the electrodes. Four electrodes are attached using cotton balls and a conductive cream. The technician will then examine your vision. The lights will be switched off and you will need to concentrate on a small dot right in the middle of a checkerboard screen.

As you try to focus, the black & white checkers will move front and back. This process will continue several times for each eye. The results are then stored and printed which will be interpreted by our specialists for accurate diagnosis.
