How Is Nuclear Medicine Imaging Test Done?

The process may vary depending on the tissues or organs being scanned, radionuclides, the technology used, and the health condition of the person undergoing the test.

Typically, a nuclear medicine scan is performed in three stages at our diagnostic centre:

1. Administering the tracer, or the radiopharmaceuticals
2. Capturing high-quality and precise images
3. Interpreting the images accurately

How Much Time Nuclear Imaging Tests Take

It can take a few minutes to a few days from the time of administering the tracer to capturing the images. This varies depending on the organ or tissue being scanned and the type of radioactive tracer used. For some patients, the scan may get completed in minutes; however, for others, it can take several days.

Preparing For The Test

📍 On the day of the scan, do not bring any kind of jewellery or metal objects. If you have braces or a pacemaker, then consult with your doctor before taking the test. You will need to change into a hospital gown and then lie down on the examination table under the gamma camera.

📍 In case of Pregnancy, must consult with your doctor before the test.

📍 Our technician will then inject the radionuclide into your veins through an intravenous line. This is done to tag the red blood cells. We may perform another tagging procedure, wherein our technician will withdraw a small amount of blood from your veins. The radionuclide is then added to the blood and injected back through the IV tube.

📍 Depending on the part of the body being scanned, you will be positioned rightly under the camera. The camera will detect the radiation released by the organ or tissue being scanned and capture a series of images. You will need to lie still during this time to ensure the images do not get blurred.

📍 After the test, our highly experienced nuclear medicine physicians will interpret the images thoroughly to detect abnormalities if any.
